New On-line Inspection System for Pharmaceutical Products

OYSTAR Manesty, in collaboration with the British company TeraView and the Universities of Cambridge and Liverpool, is developing a new technology that enables pharmaceutical tablets to be inspected on-line.  The Terahertz technology examines critical quality criteria such as hardness, density, coating thickness, moisture content, particle size and temperature during the manufacturing process.  The technology analyzes the inner structure of tablets without causing any damage to the tablets themselves.  As a result, very few tablets are rejected and significant time savings are made.

The in-situ use of Terahertz technology for pressing and coating tablets remains unrivaled. No other technology is capable of delivering such detailed, real-time information about the inner structure of tablets using a non-destructive method. Terahertz technology will make it possible to examine a representative number of tablets during production and report the results immediately. This will lead to increased quality during the production phase and significantly fewer tablets being rejected.

The development is not only a collaboration between OYSTAR Manesty and TeraView but also has the participation of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology at the University of Cambridge and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics at the University of Liverpool. Both institutes are global leaders in the development of new Terahertz applications for the pharmaceutical and material sector. They have also achieved significant success in Terahertz spectroscopy and image processing and are closely involved in pharmaceutical solid state research through the Pharmaceutical Solid State Research Cluster. With this experience at hand, the next generation of equipment for producing tablets is being developed to satisfy the most stringent quality control requirements.
